Vocalist and composer Thana Alexa has released her latest album, ONA. Throughout ONA, which is the word for “she” in her family’s native Croatian language, Alexa explores through eight unique original compositions and two new arrangements, the complex theme of what it means to be a woman.

ALL ABOUT JAZZ
Album Reviews - Thana Alexa: ONA

Thana Alexa's voice contains a world of sound, and that is without even mentioning the globe-spanning musical trappings which surround it. Hearing her is like watching a thunderstorm or maybe a wild hawk in flight. She doesn't just sing but uses her voice as an expressive precision instrument, in much the same way all the tones and electronics here are sculpted into an unclassifiably genre-defying whole.

How Musicians Are Evolving the Legacy of Resistance

AS COSS CONTINUES TO MINE online trends and culture to imbue her music with a message, another artist is finding ways of bridging the legacy of activism with her own updated concept of the protest song. On her forthcoming album ONA, slated for release in early 2020, singer Thana Alexa uses software to capture both pain and exhilaration—the singular voice of a people united, filtered through an iconic sound of resistance: the megaphone.

Ascendant Singer Alexa Flourishes at Jazz Standard

Though vocalist Thana Alexa is young and chic and possesses an electric stage presence, she’s also a warm-hearted chanteuse with old-school charm.

At the Jazz Standard this past week, Alexa greeted friends and strangers alike with her trademark warmth. There is no distance between artist and audience, nor between Alexa, her band and her music. It was as if she’d invited the audience into her home; her heartfelt presence infused every song in her 90-minute set.

Alexa debuts as a leader at The Jazz Gallery … performing a live preview of her forthcoming record ONA that explores another realm of her identity: strength in femininity. In her interview with The Jazz Gallery, Alexa discusses the origin of her effects pedal, combining American and Balkan musical influences, and the afflicted paradigm of the contemporary artist.

Admitting she was “overwhelmed,” vocalist Thana Alexa waited until she had finished her first number—a snappy, scat-filled invitation to “Take Five” via Paul Desmond and lyricists Iola and Dave Brubeck—before welcoming the capacity crowd to the CD release concert for her remarkable debut, Ode To Heroes (Jazz Village).

The 7 Best Moments From the BRIC JazzFest

Michael Olatuja & Lagos Pepper Soup

Olatuja, the group’s bandleader and bassist started solo with a melancholy, meditative run that belied what was to come: a 10-plus-minute jam that eventually evolved into some serious fusion-driven shredding, both from him (he’s played with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Angelique Kidjo) and his dynamic band. In particular, vocalist Thana Alexa stood out, turning a style of scatting that’s become cliche into something entirely new, evocative, and exhilarating.

JAZZ TIMES

THANA ALEXA ODE TO HEROES

I first heard Thana Alexa through the albums of Gene Ess and was immediately taken with the way she used her voice as an instrument and not solely as a means of transmitting lyrics. She is indeed a musician but this album, her debut asa leader, shows her brilliant skills as composer and arranger. Her original tunes are crafted so well and her arrangements so imaginative that it is difficult to imagine that this is not her fourth or fifth album.
